Yellow Wild Waterlily

Yellow Wild Waterlily
6 x 6 inches Oil on Gessobord, unframed, $100 includes free shipping to USA.
I was always drawing and painting the wild flowers of Alaska, using pen and ink and watercolor. There were so many unusual species or colors. I wandered around a lot, searching for the plants and then returning to catch them when they were blooming. Often, this is how I found the best berry patches, so there were always rewards, even if the plants were past their prime or not yet blooming.

Alaska High Bush Cranberry II

Alaska High Bush Cranberry II
6 x 6 inches Oil on Gessobord panel, unframed, $100 includes free shipping in the USA.
This is another part of the same berry patch as the last post. It was somewhere up on Basin Road in Juneau many years ago. I have many fond memories of picking berries and making jam in Alaska.

Alaska High Bush Cranberry I - Viburnum edule

Alaska High Bush Cranberry I
6 x 6 inches Oil on Gessobord, unframed, $100 includes free shipping in USA.
I was wandering around the Upper Basin Road area in Juneau when I found a patch of berries illuminated by a shaft of sunlight. It was a perfect picture awaiting paint. They were pretty soft, so I did not pick them. They are tastier a little under ripe.

Today's Pansy

Today's Pansy
6 x 6 inches Oil on Gessobord, unframed, $100 includes free shipping in the USA.
My favorite Aunt's husband often wore grey suits with a muted yellow moleskin vest. I really grew to like that combination. So here I am playing with it again. It needed another element so I added the pansy. The bright yellow center of the pansy is such a perfect focal point.

Shouldn't We Have a Special Egg Cup, All Our Own?

Breakfast Ready
6 x 6 inches, Oil on Gessobord Panel, unframed, $100 includes free shipping in the USA.
My favorite Aunt taught me many things, such as how to eat a soft boiled egg. Teaching came naturally to her as she taught grade school when she was younger. She believed in ceremony and beauty in everyday life.

Flowering Quince

Flowering Quince
6 x 6 inches, Oil on Gessobord Panel, unframed, $100 includes free shipping in the USA.
This is my favorite flowering shrub. It blooms very early, usually by Asian New Year, and has a wonderful color in various shades of red. Sometimes this plant actually produces hard little apple-like fruits. It has thorns, so is not too friendly. I have also planted the fruiting quince which is an entirely different plant, more of a small tree which blooms as late as May some years.

What a wonderful chance to use the secondary colors of orange, violet and green together. These little cups have a painting by J.Burrows inspired by Van Gogh on them, and I have the tea mug, French Press and the tiny coffee cup version. Just could not resist the secondary colors.

Spring is Around the Corner!

Spring's First Bloom
6 x 6 inches Oil on Gessobord panel, unframed, $100 includes free shipping in USA.
This plant usually has buds that can be forced to bloom inside for Asian New Year celebrations, but this year we had an extreme cold spell that blasted the buds. I picked some anyway on my way to my studio, just in case a few would open. Hurray! Warmth and light encouraged them.

Cape Cod National Seashore, Beach Forest: Trees VI

Trees VI
8 x 8 inch Acrylic on copper painted wood panel with 3/4 inch cradle, $195 includes free shipping in the USA.
Some of these trees look twisted, bent and confused as to which way is straight up. I assume they have suffered severe winds all their lives and have contorted as they have grown. The tree grows as the sapling is bent theory. This kind of crookedness also occurs where there is permafrost that melts under the trees and they start to topple over but then the ground refreezes and stops the fall. The other place I have seen such is where sheets of soil and vegetation start to slide down a variable slope, stopping for years and then sliding further. Since the land seems flat and well drained, I guess this is the result of winds.

Cape Cod National Seashore, Beach Forest: Trees V

Trees V
8 x 8  inches Acrylic on copper painted 3/4 inch cradled wood panel
Sold

This road was busy during the morning rush hour, but then it was mostly empty as I dawdled along stopping frequently to take photos or study some unusual feature. There is a peaceful feeling that comes from being in this kind of nature, wild, yet with a fine road to walk or cycle along. The trees here provide some shelter from the sun and would seem to be a fine spot for a picnic.

Cape Cod National Seashore, Beach Forest: Trees IV

Trees IV
8 x 8 inch Acrylic on copper painted wood panel 3/4 inch cradle, $195 includes free shipping in USA.

Gnarly trees under the spell of moonlight. Interesting shadows and hints of colors not seen during the day. A mystical, magical time, when everything seems possible, if only we have the thoughts or words to describe our desire. A full moon provides an amazing amount of light when the air is crystal clear.

Cape Cod National Seashore Beach Forest: Trees III

Trees III
Acrylic on copper painted 8 x 8 inch wood panel with 3/4 inch cradle, varnished, ready to hang.
The trees in this forest are survivors. They have weathered the hurricane winds and blasting ice storms that sometimes batter this coast. As a result, they are not the perfectly symmetrical cones or spheres that trees become when they are growing in a more protected location, isolated, with no competition for nutrients or sunlight or water, or dry land for that matter. As a result, these trees have terrific character. They twist, turn, grow lopsided, or even horizontal occasionally. I cherish these shapes and seek them out in places that are marginal for tree growth and survival.

This particular painting technique lends itself well to highly textured images. Lots of trees, wild flowers, brush, back lit by the sun. This is the beach forest along the road that runs the length of Cape Cod. It is a lovely drive, but I was so distracted that I forgot about getting to Province Town in time to enjoy it.
