Backpacking the Ocean Beaches

Winter Ocean Sunset
6 x 6 inches Oil on Museum Gessobord, unframed, $100 includes free shipping in USA.
We were hiking the beach on the Olympic Peninsula on a clear and cold day. When the sunset came, it was irresistible. I took a slide before rushing off for our little campsite in the forest. I knew I would paint it some day. However, I never thought I would paint it this tiny!

Early Blooming Pasque Flower Variant

Pasque Flower
6 x 6 inches Oil on Museum Gessobord, unframed, $100 includes free shipping in the USA.
This variant does not bloom as early as the wild version, but has twice as many petals and a more reddish purple color. The fluffy seed heads are as attractive as the blossoms and persist for months.

May Flowers in Yards and Gardens

May Flowers
6 x 6 inches Oil on Museum Gessobord, unframed, $100 includes free shipping in the USA.

Walking the neighborhoods in Seattle in the spring is a wonderful way to exercise. Every tree and plant seems to be trying to win the attention of the honeybees and bumblebees that flock to all the flowers. April's flowering trees have faded, but now the perennials and shrubs burst into bloom.

La Bohn Gap Natural Rock Garden

La Bohn Gap
6 x 6 inches Oil on Gessobord Museum panel, unframed, $100 includes free shipping in the USA.

One of my favorite hikes was up to La Bohn Gap. It is the site of an old copper mine and had beautiful pieces of Peacock Ore laying around 40 years ago. The mountain goats kept the foliage pruned down quite a bit, so that it looked like an oriental garden, with rocks and water.

Another View of Robinson Park Lake

Water Garden
6 x 6 inches Oil on Gessobord, unframed, $100 includes free shipping in the USA.

I really should revisit this garden to see how it has matured. Perhaps I will try for a photography trip to some of the sites I have painted in plein air years ago, just to see what has changed. I will wait until the waterlilies are blooming for this site.

Robinson Park Lake

Robinson Park Lake
6 x 6 inches Oil on Gessobord, unframed, $100 includes free shipping in the USA.
I was with a group of plein air painters, spending a day painting in this marvelous park. I did take a number of photos when I was walking around deciding what to paint. I pulled them out and have used some of them for daily paintings. I really want to thank the gardner of this park for creating such wonderful views.

The biggest problem I had that long ago day, painting on location, was not having an umbrella to provide portable shade. The watercolor that I produced that day was much too dark for indoor viewing. I sat in full sun, with the glare of white paper before me. I had to add some Chinese White paint when I viewed that watercolor in my studio, to bring back the proper balance.

Painting of Historic view of Mendenhall Glacier circa 1978

Mendenhall Glacier Circa 1978
20 x 16 inches, Oil on Gessobord, unframed, $450 includes free shipping in the USA.

While I lived in Alaska, I painted many views of this glacier as it is so accessible. It has shrunk a long way back into the mountains since I took the photo that I painted this from. Now It is not nearly as interesting as it was then. Sometimes we would see large chunks of ice fall from the snout of the glacier that was over 40 feet high at that time. The fresh ice revealed a deep midnight blue color. This only lasted a few days before turning lighter and lighter, then white.

The Mountain in the background is Stroller White Mountain. The forested ridge in front is part of  Mt. McGinnis.
